When you’re directly affected by problems or focused on your daily work, there’s often not enough time, motivation, or meaningful distance to see where obstacles, problems, and opportunities actually come from and what they mean. This makes it difficult to figure out who is responsible and how to respond effectively.

Teams, circles and individuals want guiding and advisory support to overcome this dilemma. By doing so, teams and VSHNeers aren’t left alone with their problems and instead learn how to better understand and respond to them in the future.

Key Responsibilities

Help VSHNeers in Teams and Circles or individually to
  • understand Tension (problems and opportunities).

  • find and understand the Drivers behind such Tension.

  • decide how to respond to Drivers.

  • form Proposals to address organizational drivers.

  • make decisions.

  • understand and use existing patterns and processes (S3 or VSHN made).

  • see and understand purpose and goals (of teams or the organization).


Participate actively in the Facilitator Interest Group for collective learning and mutual support between Facilitators.


Facilitators help others to navigate, orient and understand things within and relating to our organization. You as a Facilitator don’t solve problems for others and therefore depend on:

  • others to actually change things, with your guidance.

  • others the learn and practice new patterns and behavior.

  • the team granting you the needed time to fulfill the duties.

Key Challenges

  • Not being seen as a leader, complaints manager, or problem solver in the team.

  • Having the needed distance to the actual work of the team.

Competencies, Qualities and Skills

  • Outstanding communication skills.

  • Sound knowledge of S3, Agile and/or other usable patterns and methods.

  • The willingness to constantly strengthen and develop the needed skills through learning and practice.

  • Can look at problems or changes in the organization from a systemic point of view.

  • Can manage conflicting demands and expectations professionally.

  • Ability to set aside personal opinions on the topic we help others with.

Evaluation Criteria

  • VSHNeers know how to get help from you if they feel lost, for example with S3 patterns or related processes.

  • VSHNeers know how to find out who is responsible for something.

  • VSHNeers are able to address their problems or react to opportunities with the chosen processes and practices within our organization.

  • Acting as a facilitator doesn’t have a significant negative impact on the role keeper’s actual job.

Assignment of Facilitators

We see the need for one Facilitator per Team and one per (Delegate) Circle (including our Management and Board), but it’s not a hard requirement.

  • Facilitators may help within their own Team, other Teams, Circles or individuals.

  • Learning about S3 or other methods and patterns doesn’t mean that you’ve to be a Facilitator - Facilitators are teachers that help others to learn and practice.

For all Facilitators there is a the Facilitator Interest Group as a place for collective learning and mutual support.
